“Sweet Sugar Mama” is the very first song I ever wrote for Will. Before I asked Will if he wanted to sing in our band, I had always played hard rock and rap songs in the bands. I had never heard a voice that had moved me so heavily as Will Blackburn’s voice, and I knew that I had to adjust my writing to fit such an eloquent crooning vocal style. When I wrote this song we were only 16 years old, and I had recently fallen in love with my high school girlfriend of who I am proud to say I am still dating! I tried to imagine what it would be like to lose her, and experience all of the saddening nuance changes that would occur throughout the common man’s day.
No matter where SLO ends up going, this song will always be incredibly special to me as it is a document of a iconic time in our lives. You will notice some differences in this original version of “Sweet Sugar Mama,” as it was recorded on Garageband during the hectic Christmas Holidays (if you listen very closely you will hear dogs barking in the back ground.) RMM is all about us taking a risk and being vulnerable as artists by sharing our rawest documents of making music. We sincerely do RMM to give thanks as best we can to all the Purple People for the immense inspiration and love that you continue to provide. Sung by: Will Blackburn Lyrics by: John-Keith Culbreth
Lyrics:
So cold and all alone, only echos of my voice in this empty home
I dream so hard I hear words she said so I flip my shoulder and turn my head and only piled lifeless pillows lay on the bed
I go to the closet to dress myself where there lies to the left a hollow shelf, where colorful clothes use to go and glow on my girl
I get in my car on this road so lonely and long, and I shed eleven tears when I hear our old…favorite summer song and I said
*Sweet Sugar mama won’t you come back home, without you here I’m all alone and i need you more than I’ve ever needed you before
When the ticker turns six and the work is done and the earth and its people say goodbye to the sun, I start to crumble and cry when the moonlight appears
Because, that was the same moon and moonlight where we would dance and sing under the starry bright, and i’d scream to the world you are the love of my life
We would put in a movie and never watch the screen and just tell each other how we were meant to be, and have sweet sugar honey between the knee
We’d drink champagne in our pj’s and love so late that we would see the day and seize the day, but now your gone
*Sweet Sugar mama won’t you come back home, without you here I’m all alone and i need you more than I’ve ever needed you before
Come on back home, come on back home, come on back home with me
come on back home come on back home come on back home with me
*Sweet Sugar mama won’t you come back home, without you here I’m all alone and i need you more than I’ve ever needed you before
*Sweet Sugar mama won’t you come back home, without you here I’m all alone and i need you more than I’ve ever needed you before
Sweet Sugar mama Sweet sugar mama won’t you come back home
